Why is Iced Coffee so Popular in America?

For centuries coffee has been consumed almost exclusively as a hot beverage. But recently Iced Coffee has become increasingly popular in America, especially amongst Millennials and Gen Z. In Europe and the rest of the world however, the trend has barely taken off at all. This video dives into the history of iced coffee, from its roots in Japan and France, to the American Ice Trade in the 19th century, and the Pan-American Coffee Bureau’s failed effort to popularize iced coffee in the 20th Century. But with the invention of the Frappuccino in the 1990s, Iced Coffee suddenly has become much more popular the last few decades, and it is now many American’s preferred way to consume coffee, even year-round. In 2024, cold drinks made up 75 percent of Starbucks 3rd Quarter sales.
