Fifth Sunday in Lent, March 21, 2021
James and John asked Jesus, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” Jesus responded, "You don’t know what you are asking.” James and John were thinking the way the world thinks. They want to advance their careers, grabbing some comfy second-in-command seats next to God’s appointed King. But they don’t understand what kind of King Jesus is and, even though He’s told them, they don’t understand what He has come to do. Jesus’ glory is very different from their idea of glory. Jesus calls us not to upward mobility, but to follow Him into downward mobility. Grab a cup of coffee (or tea), make yourself comfortable, and let's receive God's grace together.
