Catholic TV Mass Online November 27, 2022: First Sunday of Advent
Presider: Fr. Brian Walker, O.P. Parish: Dominican Friars TEXT FROM THE GOSPEL AND HOMILY The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A proclamation of the holy gospel according to St. Matthew. Glory to you o Lord. Jesus said to his disciples: "As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the son of man. In those days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day that Noah entered the ark. They did not know until the flood came and carried them all away. So will it be also at the coming of the son of man. Two men will be out in the field; one will be taken, and one will be left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one will be left. Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come. Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour of night when the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and not let his house be broken into. So too you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the son of man will come." The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. It is so hard to believe it but today we begin the sacred time of Advent. That time when we prepare for the birth of the Lord in a very special way. I remember as a child thinking that this time couldn't come fast enough and now it seems as you get older that every time you turn around here it is again. Not only that but also the changing of the seasons and also the cold. It was a time that I looked forward to when I was younger to that special season of the year when everyone seemed to be in a good mood and holiday songs would get us in that mood for the coming of the Lord. In the first reading from Isaiah we hear how the people view the Lord. He will judge the nations and there will no longer be a need for war. What a view. Wouldn't be nice if the world were really that way? That we could all live in a world where things would be so different. Where things would be filled with peace. This is what the people thought back then. That God would do for them. We can also hope and pray for this now in our present. And in the gospel we hear how Jesus tells us that no one knows the hour nor the day but that we should always be in the midst of preparation. We should be getting ready but the question is getting ready for what? Are we just getting nice things together for Christmas or are we looking for something beyond? Are we preparing for our future or are we preparing for the great beyond? How prepared are you? How prepared are you? During these next few weeks each one of us will be given the opportunity to think about he or she needs to prepare. Don't let this time slip past you. It comes and it goes so quickly. Prepare yourself for the coming of the Lord. Amen.
