A lot has happened in the build-up to this tour of Pakistan. The Men in Green were thrashed out of the 2025 Champions Trophy inside four days, that too with an ICC event returning to their home after 24 years. Pakistan were expected to bring their "A-Game" against a comparatively weaker New Zealand side, but they were shattered by the Kiwis in the T20Is and the first ODI as well. The first ODI saw the return of Pakistan white-ball captain Mohammad Rizwan and the prolific Babar Azam, along with Abdullah Shafique, Naseem Shah, Imam-ul-Haq and a few more. However, it didn't help the visitors' cause as they faced a shambolic defeat at the hands of the Blackcaps, courtesy of a remarkable century from Mark Chapman and Nathan Smith's four-wicket haul. Chapman's 132, coupled with fifties from Daryl Mitchell and Muhammad Abbas, let the Kiwi first-innings total reach 344/7 - a score tricky for any chasing team. Although Babar Azam (78) and Salman Ali Agha (58) gave their blood, sweat and tears during Pakistan's reply. At a stage, the visitors were at 249/3 in 38.3 overs, needing 96 runs off 69 deliveries. But then they faced another Pakistan-esque collapse, causing them to lose the last seven men for 22 runs. In the aftermath of the game, they have also lost the services of Usman Khan, who opened the innings at Napier, due to a hamstring injury. Imam-ul-Haq is expected to fill in for the dashing opener, who is declared unfit for the second game. Meanwhile, Will Young will be unavailable for the remainder of the series due to the birth of his first child. Moreover, Mark Chapman has been ruled out of the second ODI on the eve of the game with a grade-two hamstring tear. Tim Seifert has been called up to New Zealand's ODI squad after five years as a replacement for Chapman. Additionally, Rhys Mariu has been added to the Kiwi squad for Young.
