The Lankan Lions are coming off a shameful 0-3 defeat at the hands of hosts, Pakistan, in an ODI series. They failed to qualify for the Asia Cup final, before which they faced Zimbabwe in a three-match T20I series, winning 2-1 after a stumble in the second game. Adding to Sri Lanka's woes, they will miss the services of their captain Charith Asalanka and fast bowler Asitha Fernando in this competition. Both have returned home due to illness. In the absence of Asalanka, vice-captain and the former skipper, Dasun Shanaka, will lead the Island nation. Pavan Rathnayake, who made his Sri Lanka debut in the recently concluded ODI series, has been added to the T20I squad. In addition, the team management has called up spinner Vijayakanth Viyaskanth into the squad as a cover for the premier all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga, who is dealing with a hamstring injury. Hasaranga missed the last ODI against Pakistan, but hasn't been ruled out of the tournament as of now. Vijayakanth was competing in the Rising Stars Asia Cup in Doha and arrived directly from Qatar. Left-arm pacer Dilshan Madushanka has been ruled out due to a knee injury, while Matheesha Pathirana is recovering from an upper respiratory tract infection. Bhanuka Rajapaksa is also back in the side. At the same time, Dunith Wellalage and Nuwanidu Fernando haven't found a place, with the former leading Sri Lanka A in the Rising Stars Asia Cup. All eyes will be on the likes of Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis, Kusal Perera, Kamil Mishara, Kamindu Mendis, Maheesh Theekshana, Dushmantha Chameera & Nuwan Thushara. These players have been regular on the Lankan side. On the other hand, the Sikandar Raza-led side fell short in the curtain-raiser against Pakistan despite giving the home side a run for their money. Put into bat first, openers Brian Bennett & Tadiwanashe Marumani rode their luck early on and added a quickfire 72-run stand. Marumani scored 30, while Bennett fell for 49. Once Marumani fell, the innings went downhill. The senior pros - Brendan Taylor and Ryan Burl - failed. Sikandar Raza was yet again the lone warrior in the middle order, as the rest of the guys struggled to deal with spin and Pakistan's death bowling. Raza struck an unbeaten 34 and helped Zimbabwe to 147/8. Brad Evans struck twice in the 5th over, including the wicket of Babar Azam. Tinotenda Maposa soon joined the party in the next over. Playing his first game for Zimbabwe in seven years, Graeme Cremer didn't take too long to come into action. At one stage, Zimbabwe had Pakistan reeling at 54/4. Raza failed to breakthrough, while Richard Ngarava came to the party a bit too late. Zimbabwe were guilty of loose bowling and nervy fielding at the backend as they lost by 5 wickets in the last over.
