Catholic TV Mass Online October 10, 2021: 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Presider: Fr. John Puodziunas OFM Parish: Assumption BVM Province Earlier this week the church commemorated the life of the great Saint Francis of Assisi. Probably one of the most well-known saints in the world, not only amongst Catholics but amongst other Christian groups also. But most of us know St. Francis as the bird bath saint standing with the water pouring out from somewhere but there's more to St. Francis. He was a poor man from Assisi, not born that way, but became a hermit and embraced the life with the poor. And even more, Francis found great joy in embracing that life with the poor, embracing the life with the outcast leper. Or the life with the neglected stranger. This is what caused him great joy. And this is exactly what Jesus desires for the man who approaches him about the way to eternal life. This joy is the goal for him. This joy is our goal, and who of us here does not want that kind of true joy? The way to this joy is not a choice between doing good or bad but more often the choice between good and better between happiness which is now, present, personal but limited and incomplete, and true happiness which is lasting, common communal to all. The man who approaches Jesus is doing everything right. He lives the commandments he recognizes who Jesus is as teacher, he shows him homage. He has his eye on eternal life. Everything right. But he comes to Jesus because there's something missing. He's still incomplete. The joy he is feeling is not true joy. He knows that the good can be better. He asks Jesus for the way to eternal life. And Jesus offers him true joy sell what you have. Free yourself from whatever it is that possess you. Whether it be money or things, or maybe power, a hatred, or a jealousy. Set yourself free. Sell what you have. Eternal life. The kingdom is not something that we do on our own. It is not something that we can buy or create on our own, but is a reality that we are born into by our baptism because Jesus has died on the cross for us. It is already ours. We are born into eternal life. And the way we live with this is when we do not allow ourselves to be possessed by the things of this world whatever they be. And that we are generous in giving not only of the things we have but really of giving of ourselves to others. This, is the way to the joy that we desire.
