Welcome, and in today's video, Dr. Guarin will discuss genital herpes symptoms and treatment. Dr. Guarin is a board-certified physician trained in Maternal, Child, and Reproductive Health. He was originally trained in Colombia at the Universidad de Santander – UDES, graduating at the top of his class. The herpes simplex virus causes genital herpes, a common sexually transmitted disease (HSV). Most of the time, the virus is passed on through sexual contact. The virus stays dormant in your body after the first infection, but it can wake up several times a year. Most people with HSV don't know they have it because they don't have any symptoms or because their symptoms are so mild. When there are symptoms, they may start anywhere from two to twelve days after the virus is caught. If you have genital herpes, you might feel pain or itching, have small red bumps or white blisters, get sores or ulcers, etc. Genital herpes can make your genital area hurt, itch, and break out in sores. But you might not have any symptoms or signs of genital herpes. If you have an infection, you can spread it even if you don't have any sores. ▶️Two types of herpes simplex virus infections can cause genital herpes: • HSV-1. This is the type that usually causes cold sores or fever blisters around your mouth. HSV-1 is often spread through skin-to-skin contact, though it can be spread to your genital area during oral sex. Recurrences are much less frequent than they are with HSV-2 infection. • HSV-2. This is the type that commonly causes genital herpes. The virus spreads through sexual contact and skin-to-skin contact. HSV-2 is very common and highly contagious, whether or not you have an open sore. Men are less likely than women to have genital herpes. It is easier for men to give the virus to women than for women to give it to men. Have multiple sexual partners. You are more likely to get the virus that causes genital herpes if you have more sexual partners. The advice for avoiding genital herpes is the same as for avoiding other sexually transmitted diseases: If you have genital herpes, you can stop it from spreading by not having sexual contact or by only having sexual contact with one person who is not infected. Condoms can also help. Even if they don't have symptoms, many people will still shed the virus and spread it to others. Studies have shown that people with HSV II genital infections can shed the virus without any symptoms between 1% and 3% of the time. Condoms are highly recommended because many new herpes infections come from partners with no symptoms but are still spreading the virus. HSV-2 can harm pregnant women and their babies, especially during the third trimester. The virus can start labor before its time, and babies can get it in the womb or as they go through the birth canal. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant and know you have genital herpes. If you think you might have genital herpes, you should ask to be checked. If you have herpes, your doctor may suggest that you take antiviral drugs late in your pregnancy to prevent an outbreak around the time of delivery. If you don't want to risk passing the virus to your baby, your doctor will probably suggest a cesarean section. ▶️ There are five things you should be remember about genital herpes: • Herpes infections are very common • You can get infected even if your partner does not have major lesions • It is hard to tell when you become infected • Treatment is effective for episodes, but it does not cure it • Practicing sage sex helps prevent it So, watch the video till the end and let us know your thoughts in the comments.
