John 2:1–11 – What Can I Expect Of Jesus?

January 19, 2025 – Sermon on John 2:1–11 There’s a connection between your expectations and your feelings. Have you ever noticed that? Cause it’s happening all the time. Sometimes we have high expectations and then are disappointed when those expectations aren’t met. They can range from inconsequential to really important. Other times, we have low expectations and are pleasantly surprised when whatever it is exceeds our expectations. And doesn’t it seem like it’s almost always one or the other? Our expectations are either too high and we walk away disappointed or our expectations are too low and we’re shocked when it turns out better than we could have hoped. If that’s true about so many things in our lives, I’m willing to bet it’s true regarding God and the spiritual part of our lives. So, what are your expectations of God? Sometimes we can expect too much of God. Or maybe the better way to say it is that we expect the wrong things from God. We expect too much of God when we think that following him means our lives should be free from struggle and hardship. We expect the wrong things from God when we think he should give us money or wealth in return for our good behavior. Again, it’s possible to expect too much – or rather the wrong things – from God and then walk away disappointed when those things we expect don’t happen. But what happens far more often for people like us is that we expect too little of God. That’s why this miracle of Jesus turning water into wine at a wedding in Cana is so insightful for people like us. Because what Jesus does here shows us that when it comes to Jesus and what he does in the world, we can and should expect more from Jesus. It’s just that we expect more from him in the way that Jesus says we can expect more from him. So yes!
