Troubleshooting a Sourdough Starter

What to do if your starter is having trouble activating: Sometimes a new starter or a previously active starter that has been neglected, can have trouble fully activating. In this case, it is recommended to add rye flour when feeding the starter - this can be dark or light rye. Simply feed your normal feed into a clean pint-sized jar, but instead of using just Kamut or all-purpose flour, use half rye flour (or ⅛ cup). Rye is a flour that ferments very quickly so it will not take many feeds for the starter to activate using the rye and once it is happy and active again, continue feeding as normal. This is a helpful trick to have up your sleeve if a starter is accidentally forgotten about or left too long - Your starter is very hard to kill and will almost always come to life!
