Cuckoo Clock Movement
Michael has been working on this charming little Cuckoo clock and looking inside reveals the intricate and ingenious mechanism that makes the bird 'cuckoo'. The first Cuckoo Clock can be traced back to 1629, owned by Prince Elector August von Sachsen. Documentation on the clock shows the full workings of a Cuckoo Clock, so it is believed that while the mechanics of the clock would have been known before this document, this is the earliest trace of Cuckoo Clocks. The Clocks have not really changed much since the 18th century and most feature a Cuckoo, however some may include characters such as wood cutters or dancers. Today's cuckoo clocks are almost always weight driven, though a very few are spring driven. The weights are made of cast iron in a pine cone shape and the "cuc-koo" sound is created by two tiny gedackt (pipes) in the clock, with bellows attached to their tops.
