This is a 72-hour look at Gyeongnidan-gil in Itaewon, a Seoul alley where the past and present coexist. ■ Gyeongnidan-gil in Itaewon, at a Crossroads of Change Gyeongnidan-gil, which stretches from Exit 2 of Noksapyeong Station on Subway Line 6 toward Hoenamu-ro, has recently become a hot spot. Within the alleyways of Gyeongnidan-gil, unique shops and exotic restaurants are easily found, making it a popular destination for young people tired of traditional franchise cafes and chain restaurants. As more people arrived, old neighborhood shops were replaced by exotic cafes and restaurants, and rents began to rise. Existing businesses that had been serving local residents were unable to withstand the increased rents and were forced to close. As 2015 winds down and the new year begins, it's time to focus on the past, present, and desirable coexistence of Gyeongnidan-gil in Itaewon, a place at a crossroads of change. ■ The Alley of Dreamers In Itaewon's Gyeongnidan-gil, where unique shops are popping up, there's someone who has been painting for five years. She is the owner of a "grapefruit drink" shop. She develops and sells drinks made with her favorite fruit, grapefruit, to cover her living expenses. Describing herself as a "dreamer," she continues to pursue her dream of becoming an artist on Gyeongnidan-gil today. The owner of a vinyl record café, which opened in Gyeongnidan-gil two years ago, was a software engineer. Rather than being consumed by the work she does to survive, he chose to find happiness in his work. In Gyeongnidan-gil, where hair salons have become cafes and humble shops are closing under the burden of rising rents, he says he wants to continue to pursue his dream of enjoying music while enjoying the unique atmosphere of Gyeongnidan-gil for as long as possible. On Gyeongnidan-gil, there's a bookstore stocking approximately 200,000 foreign books. It's owned by Choi Ki-woong, who has run the "Itaewon Foreign Bookstore" on Gyeongnidan-gil for 41 years. After settling down on Gyeongnidan-gil, he started a small shop and raised three daughters. For him, Gyeongnidan-gil is a special place that gave him land to settle and a place he's grateful for, helping him raise his children. ■ Residents' "Living Spaces" in the Winds of Change A traditional market, a laundromat, a rice shop, a hardware store, a rice cake shop!? It seems out of place on Gyeongnidan-gil, a so-called "hot spot." "Jeil Market," a traditional market located at the entrance to Gyeongnidan-gil, is lined with hardware stores, rice cake shops, and vegetable vendors. Kwon Ok-nam, owner of the rice cake shop, describes Gyeongnidan-gil as "Seoul like the countryside." This rice cake shop, boasting a country-like hospitality, primarily serves the residents of Gyeongridan-gil. There's also a flower shop that serves as a gathering place for Gyeongridan-gil residents. This is Lee Yi-soon, who has run the shop on Gyeongridan-gil for 38 years. Having overcome the heartbreaking fire that destroyed her shop 10 years ago, she vows to steadfastly maintain her place amidst the winds of change blowing through Gyeongridan-gil.
