#박희천tvblessed #내주를가까이하게함은 #NearerMyGodtoThee 작사: 사라 아담스(Sarah Fuller Flower Adams, 1805~1848) 작곡: 로웰 메이슨(Lowell Mason, 1792~1872) 이 찬송은 너무나도 많은 사람들의 사랑을 받고 있습니다. 1901년 미국의 제25대 매킨니 대통령이 암살당해 운명을 할 때, 임종을 지켜본 담당 의사는 이렇게 말하였습니다. “대통령께서는「내 주를 가까이 하게 함은 십자가 짐 같은 고생이나…, 이게 나의 평생의 기도였다오.」그리고는 조용히 눈을 감으셨습니다.” 1901년 9월 13일 오후, 미국 전역은 5분 동안 정적에 싸였다. 이 정적 후 매디슨스퀘어 광장에서 국장연합밴드는「내 주를 가까이」를 연주하였고, 바로 그 시각 영국 런던 웨스트민스터 대성당에서 드린 추모 예배에서도 이 찬송이 불러졌습니다. 이 찬송에 얽힌 너무도 유명한 사건은 1912년 4월 14일 주일저녁에 일어났습니다. 그날은 호화로운 여객선 타이타닉호가 대서양 한가운데서 침몰한 날이지요. 그 당시 타이타닉은 대서양을 횡단하기 위해 만든 지구상에서 가장 큰 배였으며, 이 배는 모든 것이 완벽하여 ‘신조차 침몰시킬 수 없는 배’라고 불렸습니다. 사고 당시 배에는 2,340명이 탑승해 있었고, 인명구조를 위한 구명보트가 많지 않아 노약자를 비롯해 711명의 목숨만 간신히 건졌지요. 나머지 1,629여명의 승객은 거의 반쪽이 난 배의 갑판과 이곳 저곳에서 희망을 잃은 채 서 있었습니다. 그 때 영국감리교회 성도인 바이올리니스트 하틀리(Wallace Hartley, 1878-1912) 악장이 “내 주를 가까이 하게 함은” 곡조를 연주했고 곧 8명의 동료도 그를 따라 연주하기 시작했다. 잠시 후 점점 사람들이 모여들어 생애 마지막 찬송을 노래했다. 거센 파도가 배를 완전히 삼킬 때까지 갑판 위에 있던 사람들은 거룩하고 엄숙하게 죽음을 맞이하며 하나님을 찬양했습니다. “....숨질 때 되도록 늘 찬송하면서 주께 더 나가기 원합니다.” 이 찬송은 나의 삶의 마지막이 다가왔을 때, 어떤 마음과 모습이어야 하는지 크게 깨닫는 찬송입니다.
