Oh Boy! by Buddy Holly and the Crickets (Lyrics)

The refrain of the Buddy Holly classic, "Oh Boy!" allows one to practice two vowel sounds: the /oʊ/ as in ROSE and the /ɔi/ as in the second syllable of TURQUOISE, as well as the consonant sound, /b/. The /oʊ/ as in ROSE sound is a diphthong - or a moving sound. The mouth position changes as the sound is formed. Begin with your lips rounded in a big circle and move them into a smaller tighter O with your lips puckered forward as they are when making the /w/ sound. As the circle created by your lips gets smaller, the tongue moves from a middle to high position. The /ɔi/ vowel sound is found in the second syllable of the word TURQUOISE, the OY sound. This sound is also a diphthong - meaning that the mouth position moves to create the sound. The sound begins with the lips in a slightly rounded, oval position and moves to a relaxed slightly parted position. The tongue is relaxed and moves from a mid-high to high position. The /b/ sound is a voiced sound - meaning the vocal cords vibrate when this sound is produced. The /b/ sound is paired with the voiceless /p/ sound because /p/ and /b/ take the same mouth position: the lips are fully together and then part quickly to produce a small release of air.
