This is the first main series installment to be played from a first-person perspective. The game was released worldwide in January 2017. The game is set in 2017, four years after the events of Resident Evil 6 in the fictional city of Dulvey, Louisiana. It features protagonist Ethan Winters, a husband who is searching for his missing wife named Mia Winters and offers fewer combat skills than most previous Resident Evil protagonists. His search leads him to a derelict mansion, home of the Baker family. The game starts with two videos from Ethan Winters' late wife Mia. The videos range from Mia saying she misses Ethan and cannot wait to get home into turning toward dark sinister warnings. The next video reveals that Mia is in fact very much alive and was presumed dead three years ago. Mia pleads with her husband that she is sorry for her lies and that he must "stay away". Ethan ignores the warning and travels to Louisiana. This eventually leads him to the swamps of Louisiana to a large planation owned by the insane Baker family.
