The Meaning of Baptism
What does Baptism mean and why is it important for Christians? The meaning of the Greek root word of Baptism, baptizein, means to wash or to dip into the water. 💦 Washing In Baptism our sins are washed away by Christ. We are cleansed of original sin and welcomed into the Church. "By Baptism all sins are forgiven, original sin and all personal sins, as well as all punishment for sin" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1263) 💦 Immersion When we are baptized, we plunge into the water and then emerge from the waters a new creation. We enter into the water and unite ourselves with Christ's death, then we rise out of the water united in the Resurrection of Christ as a new person. We become a new creation through the Sacrament of Baptism. "This sacrament is called Baptism, after the central rite by which it is carried out: to baptize (Greek baptizein) means to "plunge" or "immerse"; the "plunge" into the water symbolizes the catechumen's burial into Christ's death, from which he rises up by resurrection with him, as "a new creature" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1214).
