RMS Titanic: From Departure to Disaster (1912)
Welcome to this haunting visual chronicle of one of the most significant maritime events in history — the RMS Titanic disaster of 15th April 1912. This collection combines original film footage and period photographs to trace key moments before and after the tragedy that claimed over 1,500 lives. The film begins with the RMS Titanic departing Belfast, Northern Ireland, on 2nd April 1912, embarking on her short journey to Southampton for final preparations before her fateful maiden voyage. Built by Harland and Wolff, Titanic represented the pinnacle of Edwardian engineering and luxury, a symbol of human ambition and confidence in technological progress. Following the sinking, the RMS Carpathia is shown nearing New York Harbour on 18th April 1912, carrying 705 survivors rescued from the icy North Atlantic. Among those featured are members of the Titanic’s surviving crew, such as Quartermaster Robert Hichens, who had been at the ship’s wheel when it struck the iceberg. The footage also depicts reporters interviewing survivors, crowds outside the White Star Line offices in New York awaiting news, and the recovery ship Mackay-Bennett departing Halifax to search for victims. This compilation preserves the emotional gravity of the event — a century-old tragedy that continues to remind us of the fragility of human achievement in the face of nature’s power.
