Eventful life Vincent Willem van Gogh was born on 30 March 1853 in Zundert as the son of a minister. He became a painter and led an eventful life that was probably ended by suicide at the age of 37. Van Gogh was not very successful during his life, partly due to his difficult personality. But it was mainly his painting style that was experienced as coarse that ensured that Van Gogh only managed to sell one painting during his life. After his death, his status as an artist grew rapidly and Van Gogh has now become one of the most famous painters of all time. Movement and influence Van Gogh's work has a special place in art history and is considered to be post-impressionism. Painters of this movement wanted to do more than just depict reality. Reality could be distorted by the painter. At the same time, the painter tries to convey a feeling, for example through striking use of colour or a different way of applying paint. In addition to Van Gogh, Georges Seurat, Henri de Toulouse-Laurtrec and Paul Gauguin also belong to the movement. Van Gogh had a short and turbulent friendship with the latter. During that period, they often used the same paint and painted portraits of each other. The friendship ended when Van Gogh cut off part of his ear and was admitted to an institution. For various reasons, Van Gogh would influence new painting movements such as Fauvism, Expressionism and Abstract art. Famous works Van Gogh painted all his works during a period of ten years in which he underwent a stormy development. His early work is gloomy. When he went to live in the south of France, the light inspired him to use bright colours. Probably the most famous painting from the gloomy period is The Potato Eaters (1885). The White Orchard Vincent van Gogh (1853 - 1890), Arles, April 1888 Characteristic of the later period is the series of five paintings of sunflowers. Other famous works are the various self-portraits from 1888 and 1889, Irises (1889) and Vincent's Chair (1988). A number of his paintings later became among the most expensive in the world. For example, Portrait of Dr. Gachet was auctioned in 1990 for a then record price of $82.5 million. In 1973, the Van Gogh Museum was opened in Amsterdam. The foundation of the collection was laid by the Dutch State, which took over a large part of his work from the Van Gogh family. In addition to 200 paintings such as The Potato Eaters and a version of Sunflowers, the museum has a considerable collection of his notes, sketches, drawings and letters.
