But are “protein cookies,” or any “diet” baked good actually better for you than traditional packaged goods? Not usually, says Alyssa Lavy, R.D. "Just because the cookie has added protein does not mean it is necessarily a nutritious choice, " she tells Men's Health. Protein cookies are still processed snacks loaded with sugar, fat, and calories. "In fact, many protein cookies contain more added sugar than protein, as compared by grams per serving," she cautions. "A protein cookie is still a cookie and it should not be given a health halo just because there is added protein." That said, the added protein may keep you full for longer–compared to a typical cookie. So how do you shop for protein treats? “For many protein cookie products, the first ingredient is the protein blend instead of enriched flour (white flour); so you are getting off to a great start with just that,” says Laura LaValle, RDN, LD. “Also, many of these products are carb and sugar-controlled, and they may have other healthy ingredients, like added fiber." You should also keep an eye out for the carb-to-protein ratio, LaValle adds. “For optimal blood sugar control, you want the carb and protein grams to be about equal, i.e. 18 g of carbs, 15 g of protein,” she advises. Avoid artificial sweeteners and look for natural sweeteners like stevia and monkfruit, she says, provided the amount of sugar comes in at 5 to 7 grams of lower.  Of course, the most important aspect is taste, says Lavy. If protein cookies don't leave you satisfied, there's nothing wrong with pairing your regular cookie with another source of protein.
