March 6, 2022 - First Sunday in Lent

WELCOME! It is a joy to worship with all of you! May God bless our time together. OPENING HYMN: 121 — Jesus, Grant that Balm and Healing THE ORDER OF WORSHIP: page 15 — The Common Service THE PRAYER OF THE DAY Lord our strength, the battle of good and evil rages within and around us, and our ancient foe tempts us with his deceits and empty promises. Keep us steadfast in your Word, and when we fall, raise us up again and restore us through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: (sung) Amen. OLD TESTAMENT LESSON: Deuteronomy 26:5-10 5 Then you will respond and say in the presence of the Lord your God, “My father was a wandering Aramean. He went down to Egypt and lived there as an alien with just a few people, but there he became a great, strong, and populous nation. 6 The Egyptians mistreated and afflicted us. They imposed hard labor on us. 7 We cried out to the Lord, the God of our fathers, and the Lord heard our voice, and he saw our affliction, our labor, and oppression. 8 The Lord brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand and an outstretched arm and with great awe-inspiring acts and signs and wonders. 9 He brought us to this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 So now, look as I bring the firstfruits of the soil that you have given me, Lord.” Then set the basket down before the Lord your God and bow down before the Lord your God. RESPONSIVE PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 91 P: He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. C: I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” P: You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day. C: If you make the Most High your dwelling, then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent. P: For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; C: They will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. All:Keep me as the apple of your eye. Hide me in the shadow of your wings. NEW TESTAMENT LESSON: Romans 10:8b-13 “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the word of faith that we are proclaiming. 9 Certainly, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and it is with the mouth that a person confesses, resulting in salvation. 11 For Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” 12 So there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, because the same Lord is Lord of all, who gives generously to all who call on him. 13 Yes, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” VERSE OF THE DAY: Matthew 4:10b Alleluia. It is written: “Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.” Alleluia. GOSPEL: Luke 4:1-13 1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, 2where he was tempted by the Devil for forty days. He did not eat anything during those days. When they came to an end, he was hungry. 3 The Devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” 4 Jesus answered him, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’” 5 The Devil led him up to a high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 The Devil told him, “I will give you all this power and the glory of these kingdoms, because it has been entrusted to me, and I can give it to anyone I want. 7 So, if you worship me, it will all be yours.” 8 Jesus answered him, “It is written: ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’” 9 The Devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the pinnacle of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here, 10 because it is written: ‘He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you.’ 11 And, ‘They will lift you up with their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” 12 Jesus answered him, “It says: ‘You shall not test the Lord your God.’” 13 When the Devil had finished every temptation, he left him until an opportune time.
