The Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross came to be when St. Helena (mother of the Christian Roman Emperor Constantine) went to Jerusalem to find the holy places of Jesus Christ’s life. She had the Temple of Aphrodite torn down, which tradition said was built over Jesus’ tomb. During the excavation, workers found three crosses and burial tombs. The cross on which Jesus died was identified when a dying woman was healed after touching the cross. The Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher was built above the place where Jesus’ cross was found. The cross immediately became an object of veneration and to this day the Catholic, Eastern and Orthodox Churches all celebrate the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on September 14th, which is the anniversary of the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher’s dedication.
