Queen Elizabeth II - One Minute History
Before she was Queen Elizabeth II, she was Elizabeth Alexandra Mary; born on April 21, 1926. She was never supposed to be the queen, but her uncle — King Edward — abdicated in 1936, making her father George VI king. With the outbreak of World War II in 1939, Elizabeth was relocated to Windsor Castle for safety. Marrying Prince Phillip in 1947, she would then give birth to four children. Elizabeth became queen at only 25 years old, when her father died in 1952. As queen, she was well known for her love of corgis and her world travels — in all, she visited 117 countries throughout her reign. She passed away on September 8th, 2022 at age 96, crowning her eldest son King Charles III. Queen Elizabeth II was the longest-serving monarch in British history.
