Let’s explore this extraordinary village together. 🕍 Who Are the Mountain Jews? A Journey into the Depths of History The residents of the Red Village call themselves the “Mountain Jews” (Juhuro). Their story dates back to the 5th century BCE, after the Babylonian Exile and during the Persian Empire. Over centuries, this community migrated through Iran into the Caucasus and settled in mountainous regions, managing to preserve their faith and culture in isolation. The language they speak, Juhuri, is an ancient Persian dialect blended with Hebrew and Aramaic words. Their traditions were shaped by the harsh nature of the Caucasus; their hospitality, carpet-weaving culture, and even their cuisine bear strong similarities to other Caucasian peoples. 🏘️ Why Is It Called the “Red” Village? Only the Kudyalchay River separates the city of Quba from the Red Village. The reason behind the name “Red” (Krasnaya) lies in its architecture. When viewed from above, most of the houses are covered with red-tiled roofs. Especially during sunrise or sunset, these red roofs create a stunning cinematic contrast against the cool waters of the river and the green Caucasus mountains in the background. The village was founded in the 18th century after Fatali Khan of Quba granted protection to the Mountain Jews. Since then, not a single conflict has occurred between the Muslim and Jewish communities living on opposite sides of the river. ⛪ The Six-Domed Synagogue (Altı Qümbəz): Built in the late 19th century, this structure is the village’s most important symbol. During the Soviet era, it was used as a warehouse, but today it has been restored and serves as the spiritual center of the community. 🍵 Tea House Culture: The traditional Caucasian tea house culture is still very strong here. Elderly men wearing traditional caps gather in tea houses, play backgammon, and converse in the Juhuri language.
