EPICTETUS SAID, “DIFFICULTIES ARE THINGS THAT SHOW WHAT MEN ARE.” SETBACKS AND OBSTACLES ARE NOT MEANT TO STOP YOU, THEY’RE MEANT TO TEACH YOU. WHEN YOU SEE PROBLEMS AS OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH, YOU STOP OVERTHINKING THEM. YOU REALIZE THEY’RE JUST STEPPING STONES ON YOUR PATH TO BECOMING STRONGER AND WISER. OVERTHINKING OFTEN COMES FROM A DESIRE TO MAKE EVERYTHING PERFECT. BUT HERE’S THE THING—PERFECTION DOESN’T EXIST. STOICS REMIND US THAT STRIVING FOR PERFECTION WILL ONLY CAUSE FRUSTRATION AND STRESS. INSTEAD, AIM FOR PROGRESS, NOT PERFECTION. DON’T WASTE TIME OVERANALYZING EVERY LITTLE DETAIL. JUST TAKE ACTION, LEARN FROM IT, AND IMPROVE ALONG THE WAY. REMEMBER, IT’S ABOUT GROWING, NOT GETTING EVERYTHING PERFECT RIGHT FROM THE START. THIS MIGHT SOUND COUNTERINTUITIVE, BUT BEAR WITH ME. THE STOICS OFTEN PRACTICED SOMETHING CALLED PREMEDITATIO MALORUM, WHICH MEANS VISUALIZING THE WORST-CASE SCENARIO. WHEN YOU IMAGINE THE WORST THAT CAN HAPPEN, YOU REALIZE IT’S NOT AS TERRIFYING AS YOUR MIND MAKES IT OUT TO BE. WHEN YOU ACCEPT THE WORST, YOU FREE YOURSELF FROM OVERTHINKING BECAUSE YOU KNOW YOU CAN HANDLE IT. INSTEAD OF FEARING THE UNKNOWN, YOU PREPARE FOR IT AND THEN MOVE FORWARD WITH COURAGE. FINALLY, STOICISM IS ALL ABOUT ACTION. OVERTHINKING THRIVES WHEN WE’RE STUCK IN INDECISION. THE LONGER WE STAY IN OUR HEADS, THE HARDER IT IS TO MOVE FORWARD. BUT AS THE STOIC PHILOSOPHER SENECA SAID, “WE SUFFER MORE IN IMAGINATION THAN IN REALITY.” THE BEST WAY TO OVERCOME OVERTHINKING IS TO DO SOMETHING—ANYTHING! TAKE THE FIRST STEP.
