Walz CALL TO WORSHIP Ps. 95:1–2 Leader: O come, let us sing to the Lord and shout with joy to the rock of our salvation! People: Let us come into God’s presence with thanksgiving, singing joyful songs of praise. *HYMN OF PRAISE NO. 288 I Sing the Mighty Power of God Ellacombe 1 I sing the mighty power of God That made the mountains rise; That spread the flowing seas abroad And built the lofty skies. I sing the wisdom that ordained The sun to rule the day; The moon shines full at God’s command, And all the stars obey. 2 I sing the goodness of the Lord That filled the earth with food; God formed the creatures with a word And then pronounced them good. Lord, how Thy wonders are displayed, Where’er I turn my eyes; If I survey the ground I tread, Or gaze upon the skies! 3 There’s not a plant or flower below But makes Thy glories known; And clouds arise, and tempests blow, By order from Thy throne; While all that borrows life from Thee Is ever in Thy care, And everywhere that we can be, Thou, God, art present there. *CALL TO CONFESSION Rom. 5.8, Heb 4:16 The proof of God’s amazing love is this: While we were sinners Christ died for us. Because we have faith in him, we dare to approach God with confidence. Trusting in God’s grace, let us confess our sin. *THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION Holy and merciful God, in your presence we confess our failure to be what you created us to be. You alone know how often we have sinned in wandering from your ways, in wasting your gifts, in forgetting your love. By your loving mercy, help us to live in your light and abide in your ways, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Savior. SILENT CONFESSION *DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS Leader: Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation. The old life has gone; a new life has begun. Know that you are forgiven and be at peace. People: Thanks be to God. *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Goodness is Stronger Than Evil John Bell Goodness is stronger than evil. Love is stronger than hate. Light is stronger than darkness. Life is stronger than death. Victory is ours! Victory is ours through Him who loves us. *PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST (please share the peace as you feel comfortable) Leader: The peace of Christ be with you. People: And also with you. WE LISTEN TO GOD’S WORD TIME WITH THE CHILDREN FIRST READING Genesis 8 NRSVUE 20 Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar. 21 And when the Lord smelled the pleasing odor, the Lord said in his heart, “I will never again curse the ground because of humans, for the inclination of the human heart is evil from youth; nor will I ever again destroy every living creature as I have done. 22 As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night shall not cease.” MUSICAL OFFERING The Garden of Prayer Joseph M. Martin Tania O’Hearn, solo There’s a garden where Jesus is waiting. There’s a garden so bright and fair. For it glows with the light of His presence and a fragrance beyond compare. Come, all who carry burdens and place them in His care. O come to the garden of promise, the beautiful garden of prayer. There’s a garden where Jesus is healing, a space with love to share, Where flowers ever blooming spread peace and comfort there. Come kneel among the lilies, come breathe the sacred air. O come to the garden of promise, the beautiful garden of prayer. SECOND READING 2 Cor. 2:14-21 NRSVUE 14 But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession and through us spreads in every place the fragrance that comes from knowing him.[a] 15 For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing: 16 to the one group a fragrance from death[b] to death, to the other a fragrance from life[c] to life. Who is qualified for these things? 17 For we are not peddlers of God’s word like so many,[d] but as persons of sincerity, as persons sent from God, we are speaking in Christ before God. Leader: The word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION SERMON Odors Rev. Joshua D. Gill And by his smelling in awe of the Lord, and not by (what) his eyes see, will (the Messiah) judge, and not by (what) his ears hear, will he decide. Isaiah 11:3 WE RESPOND TO GOD’S GRACE *HYMN NO. 275 God of Our Life Sandon 1 God of our life, through all the circling years, we trust in Thee. In all the past, through all our hopes and fears, Thy hand we see. With each new day, when mo
