Identical Twins Are Captured Inside Womb, But The Photos Send A Frightening Message To Mom

When Sarah Maund was 22 weeks pregnant with identical twin boys, a set of stunning images were taken while they were still inside the womb. From facial features to toenails, these images are much more detailed than any traditional sonogram. One photo shows Sebastian and Henry “waving” at the camera. Another shows one twin kicking the camera away. Sarah and her husband Dan were blown away when they saw the images. However, these photos — as adorable as they may be — were an emotional and heartbreaking reminder that Sebastian and Henry were fighting for their lives. Henry and Sebastion were struck with a case of TTTS, or twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. Henry was receiving less blood from the placenta while Sebastian was receiving too much blood, which could have strained his heart. According to the Mirror, TTTS occurs in 10 to 15 percent of identical twin pregnancies. If left untreated, many of these babies will die. Even with treatment, there is a low chance of both babies surviving. The eery and beautiful photographs were taken by surgeon/multiple-births expert Professor Basky Thilaganathan at St George’s Hospital in London during laser ablation surgery to treat the condition. For some families, these photographs are the only chance to see both babies alive. After spending six stress-ridden hours waiting for the results, Sarah and Dan learned that Sebastian and Henry survived the procedure — but they weren’t out of the woods just yet.
