Choosing True Worship: Fulfillment of the Law 1st Reading - 1 Kgs 18:20-39 Gospel - Mt 5:17-19 In the first reading from 1 Kings, the prophet Elijah confronts the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel to demonstrate the power of the true God. Despite their fervent efforts, the false prophets fail to invoke a response from their god. In contrast, Elijah’s simple prayer to the God of Israel brings down fire from heaven, consuming the sacrifice and proving the Lord’s sovereignty. This passage powerfully illustrates the importance of true worship and the futility of idolatry. In the Gospel according to Matthew, Jesus emphasizes the enduring significance of the Law and the Prophets. He declares that He has come not to abolish them but to fulfill them, urging His followers to uphold even the smallest commandments. This teaching highlights Jesus’ role in bringing the Old Testament to its intended completion and calls believers to a higher standard of righteousness. Together, these readings underscore the necessity of worshiping the true God and adhering to His commandments. They call us to reject false idols in our lives and to embrace the fullness of God’s revelation through Jesus Christ, striving for righteousness in our daily walk. Today, I will examine my life for any idols that may be taking the place of true worship of God. I will commit to understanding and following God's commandments more closely, recognizing Jesus as the fulfillment of the Law. Through prayer and reflection, I will seek to align my actions with God's will, living out my faith with integrity and devotion.
