TODAY'S GOSPEL [You received good things in your life, and Lazarus, bad things; Now he enjoys comfort, while you suffer torment. From the Holy Gospel according to Luke 16:19-31 Jesus said to the Pharisees: “There was a rich man who dressed in purple and fine linen and dined sumptuously every day. Now a beggar named Lazarus was lying at the entrance of his house, covered with sores, and longing to be fed with the scraps that fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came to lick his sores. The beggar died, and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried. While he was in the place of punishment in torment, he raised his eyes and saw Abraham far away, and Lazarus standing by him. Then he cried out, “Father Abraham, have mercy on me. Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and I will heal him.” Cool your tongue, for I am tormented in this flame.' But Abraham answered, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received good things, but Lazarus received evil things. That is why he is comforted now, but you are in torment. And between you and us there is a great gulf yawning, so that no one can cross either way.' The rich man said, 'Then I beg you, Father Abraham, to send Lazarus to my house, for I have five brothers left there, so that he may warn them, so that they too will not end up in this place of torment.' Abraham said to him, 'They have Moses and the prophets; let them listen to them.' But the rich man replied, 'No, Father Abraham. If a dead person tells them, then they will repent.' Abraham replied, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not believe, even if someone rises from the dead.' The word of the Lord.
