I recorded this video November 2, 2025, in Belgium. it was just after All Saints' Day, November 1st. That day is a celebration of Faith, Family, and Tradition All Saints' Day, also known as La Toussaint in French or Allerheiligen in Dutch, is a significant holiday in Belgium, observed on November 1st. It's a day to honor and remember deceased loved ones, including saints, martyrs, and family members. The origins of All Saints' Day date back to the 7th century when Pope Boniface IV dedicated the Pantheon in Rome to the Virgin Mary and all the martyrs. The holiday was initially celebrated on May 13th, but in the 9th century, Pope Gregory IV moved the celebration to November 1st. In Belgium, All Saints' Day is deeply rooted in Catholic tradition and is an important part of the country's cultural heritage. The holiday is celebrated with great fervor, particularly in Flanders, where it's a day to honor the deceased and visit family graves. Visiting Cemeteries: Families visit cemeteries to clean and decorate graves with flowers, candles, and wreaths. Lighting Candles: Candles are lit to symbolize the light of faith and to guide the spirits of the deceased. Special Masses: Many churches hold special masses and services to honor the deceased. Family Gatherings: Families come together to share meals, stories, and memories of loved ones who have passed away. Traditional Foods: Traditional foods, such as speculoos (spiced cookies) and pomme frites (fries), are often served. Belgian Customs: Sint-Maarten: On the eve of All Saints' Day, children in some regions go door-to-door singing songs and asking for treats, a tradition known as Sint-Maarten. Chrysanthemums: Chrysanthemums are a traditional flower associated with All Saints' Day in Belgium, often placed on graves and in churches.
