This selection concludes with a wonderful new recording of La Valse by Maestro Umberto Battel, which follows his recent study of the piece and novel arrangement of the orchestra score for solo piano. He is often identified, alongside his contemporary Debussy, as a leading figure of musical impressionism. Ravel, however, rejected this label, and is instead better understood as a modernist, experimental composer who crafted his own, particular style by incorporating features and insights from a wide range of musical traditions (e.g. baroque, neoclassicism), and who never ceased to evolve and innovate.
