Juízes 14:18; Provérbios 28:1). Nos tempos bíblicos os leões eram comuns nas regiões da Palestina. Dessa forma, os leões fizeram parte do simbolismo político e religioso da época. Para os judeus o leão era a mais poderosa das feras. Por isso ilustrava a pessoa de um rei e representava a imponência de um governo (cf. Números 24:9; 1 Reis 10:19,20; Provérbios 30:29-31). Considerando esse pano de fundo, fica fácil compreender o uso da figura do leão na bênção de Jacó. Ao dar sua benção sobre seus descendentes, Jacó distinguiu Judá, indicando que a tribo proveniente dele, seria aquela que governaria, isto é, o reino seria colocado em Judá. Por esse motivo, o patriarca designa Judá como filhote de leão. A profecia de Jacó foi confirmada posteriormente pela aliança davídica, visto que o rei Davi pertencia à tribo de Judá (2 Samuel 7:16). Mas as palavras de Jacó encontram seu cumprido pleno somente em Cristo, o legitimo Leão da tribo de Judá. Assim, a figura do leão era um símbolo adequado para representar a linhagem real davídica da tribo de Judá. Essa linhagem, finalmente, culminou no Messias, Jesus Cristo. Ele é o verdadeiro rei que haveria de vir através dessa tribo, o representante final da casa de Davi. Por isto Ele é adequadamente designado no Apocalipse como o Leão da tribo de Judá.
