Today we begin a new church year with the first Sunday in Advent. The prophet Isaiah foretold the birth of Jesus hundreds of years before it took place. Prophecies have a “here and now” meaning and a future “not yet” meaning. The “here and now” meaning was for Ahaz, king of Judah: a promise for deliverance from his enemies. The future “not yet” meaning was a promise of deliverance for the entire world through the Savior, Jesus. “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14) Hymns & songs are used by permission: LSB Hymn License no. 110000410; CCLI License no. 254628.
