Squid Game Season 1 is a South Korean survival thriller series created by Hwang Dong-hyuk. Released on Netflix in 2021, the show follows 456 financially desperate individuals who are invited to participate in a mysterious competition. They soon realize that they must play a series of deadly childhood games for a chance to win a massive cash prize of 45.6 billion won. However, failure in any game results in immediate elimination—by death. The protagonist, Seong Gi-hun (Player 456), is a struggling gambler who joins the competition in hopes of paying off his debts and supporting his daughter. Along the way, he befriends several other contestants, including his childhood friend Cho Sang-woo (Player 218), North Korean defector Kang Sae-byeok (Player 067), elderly participant Oh Il-nam (Player 001), Pakistani migrant worker Ali Abdul (Player 199), and gangster Jang Deok-su (Player 101). Meanwhile, undercover police officer Hwang Jun-ho infiltrates the game facility to find his missing brother. The Deadly Games in Season 1: Red Light, Green Light – Players must move forward when "Green Light" is called and stop immediately when "Red Light" is announced. Any movement after "Red Light" results in elimination by gunfire from an automated doll. Sugar Honeycomb (Dalgona Challenge) – Players must cut out a specific shape (circle, triangle, star, or umbrella) from a brittle sugar honeycomb without breaking it. A broken shape results in execution. Tug of War – Players are divided into teams and must pull their opponents off a platform. The losing team falls to their death. Marbles – Each player is paired with another and must win all of their opponent’s marbles through any chosen game. The loser is executed. Glass Stepping Stones – Players must cross a bridge made of glass panels, some tempered and safe, others fragile and breakable. Stepping on the wrong panel results in falling to their death. Squid Game – The final game, based on a traditional Korean children's game. The two remaining contestants must fight in a violent, high-stakes version where the attacker must reach the goal while the defender tries to stop them by any means necessary. As the games progress, alliances form and betrayals occur, leading to emotional and psychological breakdowns. In the finale, only Seong Gi-hun and Cho Sang-woo remain. Sang-woo, overwhelmed by guilt, takes his own life, allowing Gi-hun to win. However, after returning to the real world, he discovers that the game is still ongoing and sets out to stop it. A shocking twist reveals that Oh Il-nam, the elderly player, was the mastermind behind the games, having created them for the entertainment of the ultra-rich. The series ends with Gi-hun deciding not to board a flight to see his daughter, instead vowing to take down the organization behind the Squid Game.
