mother mary's 7 sorrows

The Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary The devotion of the Seven Sorrows of Mary invites us to meditate on the deep suffering and love of Our Lady, who shared in her Son’s Passion and Redemption. 1. The Prophecy of Simeon (Luke 2:25–35) When Mary presented Jesus in the Temple, Simeon foretold that He would face rejection and that a sword would pierce her heart. Mary accepted this prophecy with faith, knowing her child was born to suffer for humanity. 2. The Flight into Egypt (Matthew 2:13–15) Warned by an angel, Mary and Joseph fled into Egypt to protect the Infant Jesus from Herod’s wrath. Homeless and fearful, Mary’s heart ached for her Son’s safety. 3. The Loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple (Luke 2:41–50) At age twelve, Jesus stayed behind in the Temple without His parents knowing. For three days, Mary searched in anguish until she found Him, foreshadowing the separation she would feel at the Cross. 4. Mary Meets Jesus Carrying the Cross (Luke 23:27–31; John 19:17) On the road to Calvary, Mary met her Son bruised and crowned with thorns. Their eyes met—two hearts suffering as one. Her pain was indescribable, but her faith never wavered. 5. The Crucifixion and Death of Jesus (John 19:25–30) Standing at the foot of the Cross, Mary watched Jesus suffer and die. She offered her Son to the Father, uniting her sorrow with His redemptive love. 6. The Body of Jesus is Placed in Mary’s Arms (Luke 23:50–54) After the Crucifixion, Jesus’ body was taken down and laid in Mary’s arms. She held Him tenderly, her heart crushed by grief yet filled with unwavering trust. 7. The Burial of Jesus (Luke 23:55–56) Mary followed the body of Jesus to the tomb. When the stone was rolled to close it, she felt the full weight of her loss—but still believed in God’s promise. 🕊️ How to Pray the Rosary of the Seven Sorrows This devotion has seven groups (“decades”) of seven Hail Marys, each reflecting on one sorrow.
