First Week of Advent - Advent Prayer Series

The word Advent comes from the Latin word advenire, meaning “arrival” or “coming.” Let this, the first week of Advent, be the beginning of four holy weeks preparing for the arrival of the celebration of Christ’s birth. How should we prepare for this celebration? By spending time in reflection and prayer as we recall the profound impact Jesus’ birth had on granting us life everlasting. The Advent wreath is a visual reminder of this spiritual time. Rich in symbolism, the circular shape of the wreath is indicative of Jesus’ never-ending love for each of us. There is no beginning and no end to His love. The flame of each candle is like Christ’s light that shines in the darkness. He is the light that illuminates our path and leads the way for us. Purple—the color of three of the candles—represents Christ's Royalty as the King of Kings. Most importantly, Advent is a time of hope in the Church. We are reminded that the Lord's first coming was prophesied hundreds of years before He was born. He was born surrounded by great hope at the first Christmas. Each Advent should be spent celebrating Christ’s first coming, as well as remaining hopeful for His Second Glorious Coming. As the first purple candle is lit, let us pray:   Grant your faithful, we pray, almighty God, the resolve to run forth to meet your Christ with righteous deeds at his coming, so that, gathered at his right hand, they may be worthy to possess the heavenly Kingdom. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
