The land area which has different heights, has a special shape and has a slopy terrain is called 'Landform'. Tectonic factors like Earthquake, volcano, tsunami and external forces like river, wind, glacier, sea waves, etc. contribute to form landforms. There are three characteristics to identify the landforms: (1) Specific heights (2) Slope and (3) Specific shape. *Landforms are of three types: (1) Mountains, (2) Plateaus and (3) Plains. Fold Mountain: The mountain which has a shape like a sea wave and has height greater than 900 metres above sea level is called 'Fold Mountain'. e.g., Himalayas of India, Block Mountain: Due to tectonic forces the central part between two strata subsides or the surrounding area submerges and the central part remains stable as a mountain. The mountain thus formed is called 'Block Mountain'. e.g., Satpuda, Nilgiri, Vindhya, Volcanic Mountain: When a volcanic eruption takes place, soil, dust particles, ash, pebbles, etc. and hot lava is thrown (erupted) out. A conical hill is formed of all these material. It is known as 'Volcanic Mountain'. e.g., Vesuvius of Italy. Fujiyama of Japan, Residual Mountain: Since thousands of years the soft rocks are eroded and the higher solid rocks sustain as a high land area. This is known as 'Residual Mountain'. Mountains serve as a natural wall for any country or a region. *The flat land area that has a height of 180 metres or more above the sea level and a wide, flat top is called 'Plateau'. Intermontane Plateau: The landform which is surrounded by high mountains fully or partially from all sides is called 'Intermontane Plateau'. e.g.. The plateau of Tibet and Mongolia. Piedmont Plateau: The region which has a straight slope on one side in the foothills of a mountain is called 'Piedmont Plateau'. e.g., Patagonia of South America, Malwa plateau of India, etc. Continental Plateau: If a region is suddenly uplifted towards a land area due to tectonic movements, it is called a 'Continental Plateau'. e.g., The plateau of Arabastan. Constructional (Coastal) Plain: When the continental shelf area near the sea is uplifted due to tectonic movements of the Earth, the plain which is formed is called 'Constructional (Coastal) Plain'. e.g... The plain along the Gulf of Mexico. Erosional Plain: The resultant landform which is formed due to the factors of erosional work of mountains, plateaus, rivers, wind, glaciers, etc. is called 'Erosional Plain'. e.g., The Western Siberian plain. Depositional Plain: The river, glacier and wind transport alluvium from one place to another and it is deposited in the lower regions of a lake or a sea. The plain thus formed is called a 'Depositional Plain'. e.g., the Ganga-Yamuna plain A 'Bay' is a partial part of the water body of an ocean. It looks like a large, open lake around a landmass. e.g,The Bay of Bengal A water mass which is surrounded by land mass on its three sides is called 'Gulf'. e.g., The gulf of Khambhat and the gulf of Kachchh. A 'Cape' is the perpendicular end of the land extended into the waterbody of an ocean. e.g., Cape Comorin (Kanniyakumari) of India The land mass which is surrounded by water from all sides is known as 'Island'. e.g., Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The narrow strip of water connecting two large water masses is called a 'Strait'. e.g., The Palk Strait between India and Sri Lanka.
