Catholic TV Mass Online November 15, 2020: 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Presider: Fr. Mark Payne Parish: Chaplain, Heart of the Nation Text From the Gospel and Homily The Lord be with you. And with your spirit A reading from the holy gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you o Lord Jesus told his disciples this parable: "A man going on a journey called in his servants and entrusted his possessions to them, to one he gave five talents; to another two; to a third, one - and to each according to his ability. Then he went away. After a long time, the master of those servants came back and settled accounts with them. The one who had received five talents came forward bringing the additional five. He said, ‘Master you gave me five talents. See, I have made five more.’ His master said to him, 'Well done my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master's joy.’” The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ Today as we hear this wonderful gospel of the talents, and I want to highlight parts of this gospel that are really important and that is there is a relationship that these servants had with their master that he entrusted his possessions and he also entrusted to them the ability to put into action and make something happen. That's important. Because you know what? Jesus entrusts us with a great ministry. But he also knows that each of us has an ability to do that ministry. We need to take up that ministry. So call to action. But you know what? Part of being a part of a ministry and taking up action involves risk. And the risk is where some of us begin to say, "mmm I’m not sure...." I’m not sure if I want to do this. Think of a relationship that you have with somebody if you have a relationship with somebody and you truly love them, you're going to risk. You don't know where that relationship is going to go. You don't know whether it's going to be fruitful or whether it could turn south. But you know something you're going to have to risk in order to have the relationship and that's what Jesus is asking each and every one of us to do as well. We need to risk. Risk in following him risk in listening to him. Risk in knowing that you know what? In following Jesus, not everything is going to be rosy and wonderful. There are going to be moments of suffering and sometimes pain. So this Sunday we are called to put into action our ministry. And you know something? It starts so simply. Someone, especially during this time of Covid, think about it... You know someone maybe in your apartment building or someone has asked you, "Could you bring me communion?" right away....uh oh... I've never done that before. I don't know if I’m going to like doing that. And now they ask me, what do I say? No? Maybe? Do I talk to the priest? What should I do? There's a lot of consternation around that. What you do is say yes and just go do it! We sometimes overthink it. And you know something? Even going to the priest, when they come to me it's very simple and then I'll give you some instructions. But you know what? It takes risk to do that. Sometimes we have to step out of ourselves. Sometimes we have to actually say ok I’m going to go ahead and do this. And you know something? That's how ministries begin. And all of a sudden you're bringing communion to lots of people. That's how it starts with the St. Vincent de Paul Society. That's how it starts with any organization all of a sudden you've got to take a risk. Putting into action. Complacency is easy. There's no risk involved. No. I won't do that. But then we don't grow. The kingdom doesn't develop and Jesus' ministry then falls short. This Sunday I’m inviting all of you, be risk takers. Develop the talents that you have been given that God has greatly given you. And don't be worried. Step forward. Be courageous. And accept the call to a greater deeper life in Jesus. Having said that, let us now profess our faith. Entrance: Christ in Me Arise Text: Trevor Thomson Music: Rick Modlin, © 2008, 2010, Trevor Thomson. Published by spiritandsong.com a division of OCP.
