We pray that you feel God’s love around you as you join us. On this Sunday (May 23, 2021), Day of Pentecost, our service began with organist, Mike Wood, playing “I Come With Joy,” arr. by Gilbert Martin. Rev. John P. Wilson then made the announcements of the church, welcoming Mike Wood back to the organ, reminding members of opportunities to serve throughout the community this coming week. Our liturgist, Linda Spencer, read the Call to Worship. Everyone was then invited to stand as they are able and sing “Christ Is Made the Sure Foundation,” # 394 in “Glory to God, The Presbyterian Hymnal” (used with permission). This hymn was sung to the tune of “Angels, from the Realm of Glory,” # 143 in “Glory to God, The Presbyterian Hymnal” (used with permission). Mrs. Spencer then read the Call to Confession, which was followed by everyone reciting the Prayer of Confession in unison, followed by a few moments of silent prayers of confession. Mrs. Spencer then read the Assurance of Pardon, which was followed by everyone singing the Gloria Patri. The Prayer for Illumination was then read, followed by the Epistle Lesson from Romans chapter 8, verses 22-27. We were then blessed with a solo by violist Bridget Carson, as she played “Sonata for Violin,” by Arcangelo Corelli, (used with permission). Rev. John P. Wilson then read the Gospel Lesson from John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15, which was followed by a prayer and then his sermon entitled “Led Into Truth.” After Rev. Wilson’s sermon, everyone stood as they were able to sing “Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness,” verses 1 & 2, # 291 in “Glory to God, The Presbyterian Hymnal” (used with permission). Everyone was then invited to read the Affirmation of Faith, “A Brief State of Faith”, parts 1, 4-6, page 37 in in “Glory to God, The Presbyterian Hymnal” (used with permission). We then entered into a time where we shared the joys and concerns of the church, followed by prayers of the people. At this point in our worship, we normally would pass around the offering plates, but with covid concerns FPC now leave the plates at both exits of the sanctuary and asks that those attending leave their offerings as they enter or exit. We use this time as a time of mediation, while we listen to our organist, Mike Wood, play “I Need Thee Every Hour” by arr. By Steven Scott. After the time of mediation ended, everyone stood and sang the Doxology followed by the Prayer of Thanksgiving and the Lord’s Prayer: "Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be they name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen." . Our members then sang our last hymn, “Go to the World,” # 295 in “Glory to God, The Presbyterian Hymnal” (used with permission). Rev. Wilson then gave the charge and benediction, and everyone begins to leave while our organist played “Allegro,” by Cesar Franck. Many choose to remain silent in their seats and enjoy the music before they left. First Presbyterian Church 201 S. 5th Street P.O.
