Can You Dry Pour Concrete?

Dry pouring concrete is one way to pour concrete, but it may not be as good as wet concrete when it comes to finished strength and durability. Concrete is designed to be mixed with water to yield maximum finished strength for any project. There are quite a few disadvantages to using pouring a dry concrete project. Dry pour concrete does not compact or consolidate well. Good consolidation means that the concrete has been placed and distributed evenly and very thoroughly throughout the project, whether it is a fence post, slab, concrete mold, etc. Dry concrete pours tend to have problems with cracking, shrinkage, pitting, etc. All of these allow for increased water permeation which causes concrete to fail early. Getting dry concrete mix to fully encapsulate any steel reinforcement used in the concrete is next to impossible. A flowable concrete is necessary to ensure a full encapsulation of the steel to allow those reinforcements to work as they should. Finished concrete is the concrete surface you will be looking at for the lifetime of the concrete. It is not easy to get an attractive finish on a dry poured concrete. It often looks pocked and pitted which, again, allows for increased water permeation. When water gets absorbed into concrete, it slowly erodes the cement component (the binding agent) washing it away from the concrete leaving it weakened and failing. Many DIYers look to dry pour concrete because they feel it is an easier, less time-consuming method. However, the small amount of time that might be saved by not wet mixing the concrete is very minimal compared to the amount of compromised strength and integrity of the finished concrete product.
