He was a descendant of David, and the virgin's name was Mary. 28The angel came to her and said, “Rejoice, full of grace, the Lord is with you!” 29Mary was troubled by this and began to ponder what kind of greeting this might be. 30The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David. 33He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and his kingdom will have no end.” 34Mary asked the angel, “How can this be, since I have no husband?” 35The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the holy child to be born will be called the Son of God. 36Your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age. She who was said to be barren is now in her sixth month. 37For nothing will be impossible with God.” 38Then Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word.” And the angel departed. —Word of the Savior. —Glory to you, Lord.
