Dig & Store Dahlia Tubers | Quick & Easy | Storing Dahlia Tubers | Zone 5b | Dahlia Flower Care
No lengthy intros. Straight to the point on how I dig and store my dahlia tubers. Our zone is a 5b zone in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago. I grow a variety of flowers and vegetables. Surprise! There isn't a right way to store dahlia tubers but rather you just need to find the best storage for your particular situation. Here are the steps I use for storing my dahlias tubers: After the first frost I start digging the tubers using a pitchfork. I do leave the stalk about 6-12 inches for easy grasping of the tubers. -I place the tuber in crates but shake or review and excess soil. -I wash the tubers with an outdoor hose, spraying the tubers down. Many people skip this step which is also ago. -I let the tubers sit up to 5 days inside my garage (temperature is around 50 degrees) and let them dry. -I fill up my paper lawn bag with a couple of buckets of vermiculite and place the clumps of tubers in the bag. Others use peat moss instead of vermiculite. -I store the tubers on a shelf in our garage and keep temps around 50 degrees. I check the tubers at least once a month for any signs of mold or mice. Tips I would suggest using large crates approximately 24"x16"x8". To find the crates, check on Facebook Marketplace if anyone is offering them for sale or reach out to a local nursery nearby your area. Methods that I've tried and failed at: 1. Wrapping each tuber in plastic and rolling them individually. This caused for me to loose my entire inventory of dahlia tubers due to mold. 2. Vermiculite in a plastic shoe box. Again, due to mold I lost my inventory of dahlia tubers.
