Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro’ the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watch’d, were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof thro’ the night that our flag was still there. O say, does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave? 2절 On the shore, dimly seen thro’ the mist of the deep, Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam, In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream ’Tis the star-spangled banner. Oh! long may it wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave! 3절 And where is that band who so vauntingly swore That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion A home and a country should leave us no more? Their blood has washed out their foul footstep’s pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave, And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave. 4절 Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand Between their loved homes and the war’s desolation, Blest with vict’ry and peace, may the Heav’n rescued land Praise the Pow’r that hath made and preserved us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto: "In God is our trust." And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave ◆스타즈 스프랭글드 배너 1절 동이 트는 오늘 새벽에도 어젯밤 우리가 석양 빛 속에도 가슴깊이 환호하고 있던 깃발을 우리는 자랑스럽게 본다. 그 누구의 광활한 띠이며 빛나는 별들이기에 우리를 감싸는 성조기는 치열한 전투 중 우리가 사수한 성벽 위에서도 의연히 나부끼고 있었다. 붉게 타오르며 작렬하는 포화와 치열한 폭탄 속에서도 우리의 성조기가 우뚝 서 있음을 우리는 보았다. 오! 자유의 땅, 용감한 백성의 땅 위에 성조기는 지금도 휘날리고 있다. 2절 저 깊은 안개 사이로 희미하게 보이는 해안, 오만한 적군도 공포의 적막 속에서 숨어 있는 그 곳에서 드높이 치솟은 절벽 위로 변덕스런 산들바람 따라 반쯤 가려졌다 반쯤 드러나 보이는 저것이 무엇이냐? 이제 아침의 첫 광휘를 받아 충만한 영광에 반사되어 강물 위로 빛나는, 그것은 바로 성조기. 오! 영원토록 휘날리소서 자유의 땅과 용자들의 고향에서! 3절 그토록 자신만만 호언장담했던 그 무리는 어디 있느뇨? 그리고 전쟁의 파괴와 전투의 혼란 속에서 우리에게 집이고 조국이고 아무것도 남아있지 않으리라 그들의 피로 더러운 자신의 발자국의 떼를 씻어냈도다. 그 어떤 피난처도 그 용병들과 노예들을 패주의 공포와 무덤의 암흑으로부터 구해주지 못했고, 성조기는 승리차게 휘날리누나 자유의 땅과 용자들의 고향에서! 4절 오! 그리하여 자유로운 사람들이 사랑하는 그들의 고향과 전쟁 폐허 사이에서 언제나 일어서리라. 승리와 평화로 축복을 받으며 하늘이 구한 이 땅이 우리의 나라를 만들고 지켜 준 신의 권능을 찬양하게 하소서. 대의가 정당하면 우리는 필승할 것이오, 우리의 좌우명은 "우리는 하나님을 믿는다". 그리고 성조기는 승리차게 휘날리리라 자유의 땅과 용자들의 고향에서! ◆1814년 9월 13일 밤새도록 영국 함대는 메릴랜드주 볼티모어 항 맥헨리 요새에 포격을 가했다. 34세의 변호사이자 시인 프란시스 스코트 키는 이 공격을 포로 교환선 갑판에서 지켜보았다. 그는 친구의 석방을 위해 갔으나 공격이 끝난 뒤까지 상륙허가를 거부당했다. 이튿날 아침 전투가 끝나자 키는 망원경을 요새로 돌려 미국기가 아직도 펄럭이는 것을 보았다. 이 광경에 크게 감동한 나머지 그는 주머니에서 편지지를 꺼내 시를 쓰기 시작했는데 이것이 마침내 미국의 국가 “스타즈 스프랭글드 배너”로 채택되었다.
