Sourdough Rules I Break #shorts
I used to follow all the rules when I first started making sourdough bread. But then as I got more comfortable with bread making I started experimenting and seeing what was actually necessary. Turns out I can get away with a lot of things and still have delicious bread. So if you are worried about all the rules of sourdough making just know there are simpler ways. It doesn’t have to be complex and the more comfortable you get the easier it becomes. Keep going! So here are three of the sourdough rules i don’t always follow: 1. Using my starter right at peak- If my starter doubles and is ready before I’m ready to use it I pop it in the fridge for later. Then once I’m ready to make bread I’ll pull it out of the fridge and use it immediately. It works great and gives me more flexibility. 2. Feeding my starter exact ratios- I think ratios can be a helpful tool when feeding your sourdough starter to determine timing and eliminate excess starter but for some people it’s overwhelming and the math is confusing. I sometimes use exact ratios and sometimes I just eyeball it. I know that if I only leave a small layer of starter in my jar and feed it 100g of flour and 100g water before bed it will be ready the next morning. So when I don’t want to think about how much to feed my starter that’s exactly what I do and it works great. 3. Waiting 30 minutes to add salt- I used to always do this and then one day I stopped and realized my outcome was the same. So I ditched that all together and now mix everything at the beginning!
