Originally slated for a brief eight-day test mission aboard Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, their stay was extended due to unexpected technical difficulties with the vehicle. The astronauts, currently aboard the International Space Station (ISS), faced an extended stay due to earlier technical issues with the Boeing Starliner spacecraft. Why Was Sunita Williams’ Stuck In Space For 9 Months? Their mission, which began in June of last year, was initially planned as an 8-day test flight for Boeing’s Starliner. However, propulsion problems with the Starliner rendered it unsafe for their return journey, requiring a change of plans. The astronauts were then added to the Crew-9 mission. Now the astronauts, after an extended stay in space conducting over 150 scientific experiments, are returning to Earth as part of the SpaceX Crew-9 mission.
