Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte's lawyer Salvador Medialdea on Friday called his arrest "pure and simple kidnaping" at the International Criminal Court during his first scheduled appearance. "My client was denied all access to the legal recourse in the country of his citizenship, and this all in the nature of political score settling," Medialdea said, as Duterte listened on. The 79-year-old Duterte, appeared by videoconference, days after his arrest in Manila on murder charges linked to the deadly “war on drugs” he oversaw while in office. Duterte, the first Asian former leader arrested on an ICC warrant, was read his rights and formally informed of the charges of crimes against humanity that the court’s prosecutors filed against him after a lengthy investigation. ICC presiding judge Iulia Antoanella said the ICC doctor had found Duterte to be "fully, mentally aware and, fit" to take part in proceedings and that he had "undergone further checks and tests at the detention facility."
