/æ/ vs /ɑ/ Vowel Sounds - American English Pronunciation Practice #minimalpairs #vowelsounds

This video will help train your ear to hear the difference between the /æ/ as in BLACK vowel sound and the /ɑ/ as in OLIVE vowel sound. Listen to each Minimal Pair and repeat the words aloud. (Minimal Pairs are two words that sound the same EXCEPT FOR one sound.) To make the /æ/ as in BLACK sound, the mouth is open and the lips are NOT rounded. The edges of the mouth pull slightly to the sides making more of a rectangular shape. The tongue is flat on the floor of the mouth. The /ɑ/ as in OLIVE vowel sound is the same vowel sound in HOT and in the first syllable of FATHER. To make this sound, drop your jaw as if you are yawning. The lips do NOT round. The tongue is relaxed on the floor of the mouth.
