Dimuth Karunaratne, who is playing his 100th and final Test, opened alongside Pathum Nissanka who looked scratchy at the crease before getting cleaned up on 11 in the eighth over. Dinesh Chandimal joined Karunaratne at the crease and led the recovery work for the hosts.Both Karunaratne and Chandimal looked solid at the crease and pounced on anything loose. Nathan Lyon picked up his second by knocking over Karunaratne on 36 to break the 70-run stand post the lunch break. Angelo Mathews was sent packing cheaply on one by Lyon. Chandimal though looked good at the crease and brought up a well-composed fifty. Travis Head struck straightaway by dismissing Kamindu Mendis on 13. Lankan skipper Dhananjaya de Silva registered a golden duck as half of the Lankan side was back in the hut with only 127 on the board. Kusal Mendis along with Chandimal weathered the storm and remained unscathed till tea. Chandimal was stumped on 74 right after the tea break.Ramesh Mendis walked out to bat at number eight. He and Kusal looked positive at the crease and kept ticking the scoreboard. Both took their stand past 50 and kept the Aussies at bay in the evening session.
