Catholic TV Mass Online July 24, 2022: 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Presider: Fr. Mark Payne Parish: Chaplain, Heart of the Nation Choir: Thelen Family TEXT FROM THE HOMILY Very, very powerful gospel today on this Sunday. I want to focus on the Our Father. You know there are so many beautiful points about the Our Father and I don’t know about you but so often I can pray the Our Father but I don't always get the depth of that beautiful prayer. First of all, there's an intimacy about the prayer. Our Father. He doesn't say, "O God" the creator. No, he says, Our Father. Meaning that we have this wonderful intimacy with our God. An intimacy that brings us always close to him. But then we are to honor his name. And I'll tell you something today, folks, if there's something a lot of us need to work on, that can be honoring his name. He offers us our daily bread. He says that I will provide whatever you need. I will give you. So we need to surrender ourselves and not let the "I" get in the way of God. You see, sometimes we want to take care of it. The prayer isn't being answered quick enough or we sit there in the middle of the night staring at the ceiling wondering how are "we" going to take care of the situation. No, no, God will offer us our daily bread. And then our relationship with one another. How often do we not forgive each other? Or we hold onto grudges? How often are we losing our temper or impatient? And we need to be more understanding and compassionate. You know, to forgive one another. God forgave all of those people in Sodom. Even if there were 10. He spared the city. He showed his great love. And so he shows the great love for us. Let us love one another and show that great love towards each other. And then finally don't let us fall into temptation. Temptation we face every single day. Whether it's making a moral decision. Whether it's knowing that you know what? That doesn't belong to us. The things that we say about each other. We can be led into temptation and we pray in this prayer Lord, God, father, spare us from these temptations. If we surrender ourselves the door will be opened. If we are really in truth believing that God will take care of everything, then he will answer the prayer. What we have to learn is to let go. We want to control. We want to tell God how the prayer should be answered. We want it this way. No. Let's let God answer the prayer the way God wants to answer it.
