Holy Mass Daily Readings and Reflection - September 15, 2022, | Daily Gospel Today Reflection | John Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows 1st Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 118:1B-2, 16AB-17, 28 Gospel: John 19:25-27 Personal Reflection Today’s Reflection on the Readings Prayer We honour Our Lady of Sorrows today. It is only fitting that we think about how Mary and Jesus became one in the Salvation Mystery. The emphasis of today's Gospel reading is on the gift that Jesus bestows from the Cross—giving John, His mother and to His mother, John. Through the years, this has been understood to mean that John is speaking for the Church as the Body of Christ. Jesus' heart is open to those in need even as he is about to die. He acknowledges Mary and John's grief and requests that they create room in their lives for one another. As Jesus asks me to live more intimately with Mary and John, the text from today's sermon encourages me to consider what I could learn from them. Is it possible that Jesus occasionally extends the same invitation to me? He invited Mary and John to make room in their life for new connections of care. Let's join St. Anselm in prayer to Mary in the following words: "O good mother, by the love with which you love your son and desire him to be loved, acquire for us the grace we beg you to love him really as you sincerely love him and desire him to be loved."
