The merchant who realised the donkey's trick one day loaded the donkey with a bag of cotton, and on this day when the donkey tripped and fell into the river, the weight of the load increased since the cotton had soaked in water, and the donkey was not able to bear the burden. The lazy donkey was not strong enough to carry the heavy load and was forced to work hard to make it to the market.
