Festival 1974 Increasingly distinguished by its musical diversity, the 8th edition of the Festival hosts not only Van Morrison, Sonny Rollins, Soft Machine, Slide Hampton, The Gil Evans Orchestra and Charles Earland but also Cecil Taylor, Bill Wyman and Larry Coryell. Spectators take in The Art Ensemble of Chicago with Lester Bowie, Randy Weston with Billy Harper, The Mahavishnu Orchestra with John McLaughlin and Jean-Luc Ponty as well as Thad Jones backed by Mel Lewis, Jon Faddis, Billy Harper and Dee Dee Bridgewater. 1974 is also the year that Brazilian music arrives at Montreux – the start of a particularly close relationship: Flora Purim gives a concert accompanied by Milton Nascimento, Ron Carter and Airto Moreira. As for Billy Cobham, he has John Abercrombie, Glenn Ferris, Michael and Randy Brecker up on stage together.
